It is excreted in breast milk in clinically non-significant amount and no problems have been observed in infants whose mothers took this medication. Levels in plasma and urine of such infants were undetectable. Having published less quantity of studies than with other drugs of the same group, safer alternatives may be preferable, especially in the neonatal period and in case of prematurity. The American Academy of Pediatrics rates it as usually compatible with breastfeeding.

Low amounts of EINECS 252-974-3 in milk and failure to detect EINECS 252-974-3 or its metabolites in the urine of 2 older infants indicates that it would not be expected to cause adverse effects in older breastfed infants. Because there is no published experience with EINECS 252-974-3 during breastfeeding in the newborn period, shorter-acting agents may be preferred while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.

EINECS 252-974-3 Side Effects in Breastfeeding

No adverse effects were found in the breastfed infant of a patient receiving 20 mg of EINECS 252-974-3 daily for 4 months starting the 9th month postpartum.[1]Four infants 3 to 4.5 months of age remained healthy during long-term therapy of their mothers with EINECS 252-974-3 20 mg daily.[2]
