Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Lapatinib? Is Lapatinib safe for nursing mother and child? Does Lapatinib extracts into breast milk? Does Lapatinib has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Lapatinib influence milk supply or can Lapatinib decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Lapatinib usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of lapatinib during breastfeeding. Because lapatinib is more than 99% bound to plasma proteins, the amount in milk is likely to be low. However, its half-life is about 24 hours and it might accumulate in the infant. It is also given in combination with capecitabine, which may increase the risk to the infant. The manufacturer recommends that breastfeeding be discontinued during lapatinib therapy.
