Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Hexaminolevulinate? Is Hexaminolevulinate safe for nursing mother and child? Does Hexaminolevulinate extracts into breast milk? Does Hexaminolevulinate has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Hexaminolevulinate influence milk supply or can Hexaminolevulinate decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Hexaminolevulinate usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of hexaminolevulinate during breastfeeding. After instillation into the bladder, only about 7% of a dose is absorbed into the maternal bloodstream, so the amount of drug excreted into milk is expected to be minimal. If hexaminolevulinate is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. Until more data become available, hexaminolevulinate should be used with caution during breastfeeding, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
