Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Flunarizine? Is Flunarizine safe for nursing mother and child? Does Flunarizine extracts into breast milk? Does Flunarizine has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Flunarizine influence milk supply or can Flunarizine decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Flunarizine usage in lactation

Flunarizine is not approved for marketing in the United States by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but is available in other countries. No information is available on the use of flunarizine during breastfeeding. Because of its long half-life of 19 days in children, expert opinion recommends that flunarizine not be used in migraine prophylaxis.[1][2][3] An alternate drug is preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
