Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Elagolix? Is Elagolix safe for nursing mother and child? Does Elagolix extracts into breast milk? Does Elagolix has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Elagolix influence milk supply or can Elagolix decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Elagolix usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of elagolix during breastfeeding. Elagolix is 80% protein bound, has a half-life of 4 to 6 hours, and it is a peptide that is likely digested in the infant's gastrointestinal tract, so it is unlikely to reach clinically important levels in infant serum. If elagolix is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. However, because no information is available on the use of elagolix during breastfeeding caution should be used, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
