Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Baloxavir? Is Baloxavir safe for nursing mother and child? Does Baloxavir extracts into breast milk? Does Baloxavir has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Baloxavir influence milk supply or can Baloxavir decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Baloxavir usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of baloxavir marboxil during breastfeeding. Because baloxavir is 93% bound to plasma proteins, the amount in milk is likely to be low. The drug's half-life is 4 hours, so any drug in breastmilk should be gone in one day. If baloxavir is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. However, because no information is available on the use of baloxavir breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
