Answer by Dr. Ru: About Chondroitin Sulfate Sodium usage in lactation

Copolymer which is found in nature that is obtained from cartilage of various terrestrial or marine animals and used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. It is a mucopolysaccharide which is formed by polymers of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and devoid of toxicity. It is presented in the human body and breast milk, with the highest concentration in the milk of mothers of preterm babies. (Coppa 2012).Half concentration of GAG in the milk is contained as chondroitin sulfate with anti-infectious properties; among others, it protects the gastrointestinal tract of infants against infections (Maccari 2016).Its concentration is not affected by Holder pasteurization method of breast milk.Changes on the composition of chondroitin sulfate in the milk have been detected in cases of breast cancer. Because a high molecular weight the passage of significant amounts into milk is highly unlikely. Its low oral bioavailability hinders the passage from ingested milk to the infant plasma.
