Is Sumax Safe in Breastfeeding

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Sumax? Is Sumax safe for nursing mother and child? Does Sumax extracts into breast milk? Does Sumax has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Sumax influence milk supply or can Sumax decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Until more information on other Triptan-related compounds are available Sumax is thought to be the safest one because of both a low excretion into breast milk and a low gut absorption.

BBecause of the low levels of Sumax in breastmilk, amounts ingested by the infant are small. It also has poor oral bioavailability, further decreasing infant exposure to the drug. Some authors have suggested that withholding breastfeeding for 8 hours after a single subcutaneous injection would virtually eliminate infant exposure to the drug.[1] The manufacturer recommends withholding breastfeeding for 12 hours after a dose. Withholding breastfeeding might be helpful in extreme cases, such as in the mother of a preterm infant, but Sumax would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in most breastfed infants. One anecdotal report of lactation ceasing after a single injection of Sumax has not been verified.

One author reported correspondence with the drug's manufacturer stating that of 3 women known to the manufacturer who used Sumax (dose and route unspecified) during breastfeeding none reported adverse effects on the infants.[2]
