Answer by Dr. Ru: About Maternal Otosclerosis usage in lactation

Disease that causes hearing loss in which genetic and environmental factors are involved, however not fully understood yet: the role of viruses like measles, hormones like estrogen and others (Schrauwen 2010, Markou 2009, Horner 2009).It is more common among Caucasians and women of childbearing age (Arnold 1996).It has been found a decreased frequency among population who received measles vaccination (Arnold 2007). There is controversy over whether it triggers or worsens during pregnancy, but has not been found association with breastfeeding (Lippy 2005). Since during lactation there is a slight hypoestrogenic state and this disease has been associated with the presence of estrogen, breastfeeding may have a protective effect.
