Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Botox? Is Botox safe for nursing mother and child? Does Botox extracts into breast milk? Does Botox has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Botox influence milk supply or can Botox decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Botox usage in lactation

No data exist on the medical use of Botox (botulinum toxin) during breastfeeding. However, one infant was safely breastfed during maternal botulism and no botulinum toxin was detectable in the mother's milk or infant. Since the doses used medically are far lower than those that cause botulism, amounts ingested by the infant, if any, are expected to be small and not cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants.[1] No special precautions are required.

Botox Side Effects in Breastfeeding

Published information on the medical use of Botox during breastfeeding was not found as of the revision date. A woman developed botulism after ingesting fermented salmon eggs while breastfeeding her 8-month-old breastfed (extent not stated) infant. The infant developed no signs or symptoms of botulism even though she continued to nurse throughout the mother's hospitalization.[2]
