La radioterapia, sola o asociada a quimioterapia y cirugía, se utiliza en el tratamiento del cáncer. Consiste en irradiar para destruir las células cancerosas con rayos x de alta energía o haces de protones (ASCO 2016). Puede ser externa o de haz externo, cuando se administra desde un aparato externo al cuerpo, o interna o braquiterapia, cuando se introduce material radioactivo dentro del cuerpo, en el tumor o tejido circundante. Este artículo se refiere a la RADIOTERAPIA INTERNA o braquiterapia. En ella, la radiación está dentro del organismo; el paciente emite radiación desde el dispositivo insertado o administrado internamente (ASCO 2016), por lo que no se debe entrar en contacto cercano (menos de 2 metros) ni tener contacto durante más de 5 minutos con niños o mujeres embarazadas durante 2 meses si es un implante permanente o desde unos minutos a unos días (consultar con el radioterapéuta) en caso de radioterapia interna temporal (ASCO 2016). Estas mediadas van hacer posponer la lactancia de modo directo o impedirla si el tiempo de interrupción necesario es excesivo. Si se decide continuar con la lactancia después de una interrupción, durante la misma hay que extraer la leche (para mantener la producción); esta leche, que no es radioactiva, se puede administrar al lactante por otra persona diferente a la madre y/o congelar si sobrase.
