Droleptan lactation summary

Droleptan usage has low risk in breastfeeding
  • DrLact safety Score for Droleptan is 3 out of 8 which is considered Low Risk as per our analyses.
  • A safety Score of 3 indicates that usage of Droleptan may cause some minor side effects in breastfed baby.
  • Our study of different scientific research indicates that Droleptan may cause moderate to no side effects in lactating mother.
  • Most of scientific studies and research papers declaring usage of Droleptan low risk in breastfeeding are based on normal dosage and may not hold true for higher dosage.
  • While using Droleptan We suggest monitoring child for possible reactions. It is also important to understand that side effects vary largely based on age of breastfed child and time of medication in addition to dosage.
  • Score calculated using the DrLact safety Version 1.2 model, this score ranges from 0 to 8 and measures overall safety of drug in lactation. Scores are primarily calculated using publicly available case studies, research papers, other scientific journals and publically available data.

Answer by DrLact: About Droleptan usage in lactation

Because little information is available on the long-term use of Droleptan during breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant. Single-dose or short-term use during breastfeeding, such as during surgery, is unlikely to adversely affect the breastfed infant, especially if the infant is older than 2 months.[1] When multiple doses are given to the mother, monitor the infant for drowsiness, especially in younger, exclusively breastfed infants and when using combinations of psychotropic drugs.

Droleptan Side Effects in Breastfeeding

A randomized study compared the breastfed infants born by cesarean section whose mothers received either morphine or morphine plus Droleptan by patient-controlled analgesia postoperatively. On days 1 and 2 of life, the infants whose mothers received Droleptan had a lower neonatal neurologic and adaptive capacity score (NACS) than those who received morphine only.[2] One breastfed (extent not stated) infant whose mother was taking Droleptan had a somewhat decreased intellectual development on testing, but her mother had also taken olanzapine, clonazepam, sertraline, thioridazine and valproic acid while breastfeeding.[3]

Droleptan Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

Hyperprolactinemia has been reported in patients taking long-term Droleptan[4][5] and after short-term use during surgical procedures.[6][7] The maternal prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
