Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Cubicin? Is Cubicin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Cubicin extracts into breast milk? Does Cubicin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Cubicin influence milk supply or can Cubicin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Cubicin usage in lactation

Limited and somewhat inconsistent information indicates that Cubicin produces very low levels in milk and it would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. No special precautions are required.

Cubicin Side Effects in Breastfeeding

A mother nursing (extent not stated) a 5-month-old infant received intravenous Cubicin 500 mg and ertapenem 1 gram once daily for 28 days to treat a pelvic infection. No adverse events were noted in the infant during the treatment or follow-up examination. A woman nursing a newborn was given Cubicin 500 mg intravenously once daily for 14 days. No adverse effects were noted in the infant during therapy and for 7 days after the end of therapy.[2]
