Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Daptomycin for injection? Is Daptomycin for injection safe for nursing mother and child? Does Daptomycin for injection extracts into breast milk? Does Daptomycin for injection has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Daptomycin for injection influence milk supply or can Daptomycin for injection decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Daptomycin for injection usage in lactation

Limited and somewhat inconsistent information indicates that Daptomycin for injection produces very low levels in milk and it would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. No special precautions are required.

Daptomycin for injection Side Effects in Breastfeeding

A mother nursing (extent not stated) a 5-month-old infant received intravenous Daptomycin for injection 500 mg and ertapenem 1 gram once daily for 28 days to treat a pelvic infection. No adverse events were noted in the infant during the treatment or follow-up examination. A woman nursing a newborn was given Daptomycin for injection 500 mg intravenously once daily for 14 days. No adverse effects were noted in the infant during therapy and for 7 days after the end of therapy.[2]
