Does 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine extracts into breast milk? Does 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine influence milk supply or can 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine during breastfeeding. Because of its poor oral bioavailability and short half-life, any 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine in milk is unlikely to affect the infant. Intravenous 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine infusion may decrease milk production. 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine is known to reduce serum prolactin in nonnursing women, but no information is available on its effect on milk production in nursing mothers.

3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

Intravenous 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine infusion in doses of 2 to 5 mcg/kg/minute given to nonnursing subjects and in women with hyperprolactinemia decreases serum prolactin concentrations.[1][2][3][4][5] However, relevant published information on the effect of intravenous 3,4-Dihydroxyphenethylamine on milk production in nursing mothers was not found as of the revision date. The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
