Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane? Is alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane safe for nursing mother and child? Does alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane extracts into breast milk? Does alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane influence milk supply or can alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane during breastfeeding. Because of its poor oral bioavailability and short half-life, any alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane in milk is unlikely to affect the infant. Intravenous alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane infusion may decrease milk production. alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane is known to reduce serum prolactin in nonnursing women, but no information is available on its effect on milk production in nursing mothers.

alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

Intravenous alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane infusion in doses of 2 to 5 mcg/kg/minute given to nonnursing subjects and in women with hyperprolactinemia decreases serum prolactin concentrations.[1][2][3][4][5] However, relevant published information on the effect of intravenous alpha-(3,4-Dihydroxyphenyl)-beta-aminoethane on milk production in nursing mothers was not found as of the revision date. The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
