Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Dopamin? Is Dopamin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Dopamin extracts into breast milk? Does Dopamin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Dopamin influence milk supply or can Dopamin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Dopamin usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of Dopamin during breastfeeding. Because of its poor oral bioavailability and short half-life, any Dopamin in milk is unlikely to affect the infant. Intravenous Dopamin infusion may decrease milk production. Dopamin is known to reduce serum prolactin in nonnursing women, but no information is available on its effect on milk production in nursing mothers.

Dopamin Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

Intravenous Dopamin infusion in doses of 2 to 5 mcg/kg/minute given to nonnursing subjects and in women with hyperprolactinemia decreases serum prolactin concentrations.[1][2][3][4][5] However, relevant published information on the effect of intravenous Dopamin on milk production in nursing mothers was not found as of the revision date. The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
