Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Dopaminum [INN-Latin]? Is Dopaminum [INN-Latin] safe for nursing mother and child? Does Dopaminum [INN-Latin] extracts into breast milk? Does Dopaminum [INN-Latin] has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Dopaminum [INN-Latin] influence milk supply or can Dopaminum [INN-Latin] decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Dopaminum [INN-Latin] usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of Dopaminum [INN-Latin] during breastfeeding. Because of its poor oral bioavailability and short half-life, any Dopaminum [INN-Latin] in milk is unlikely to affect the infant. Intravenous Dopaminum [INN-Latin] infusion may decrease milk production. Dopaminum [INN-Latin] is known to reduce serum prolactin in nonnursing women, but no information is available on its effect on milk production in nursing mothers.

Dopaminum [INN-Latin] Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

Intravenous Dopaminum [INN-Latin] infusion in doses of 2 to 5 mcg/kg/minute given to nonnursing subjects and in women with hyperprolactinemia decreases serum prolactin concentrations.[1][2][3][4][5] However, relevant published information on the effect of intravenous Dopaminum [INN-Latin] on milk production in nursing mothers was not found as of the revision date. The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
