Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use NSC 173182? Is NSC 173182 safe for nursing mother and child? Does NSC 173182 extracts into breast milk? Does NSC 173182 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can NSC 173182 influence milk supply or can NSC 173182 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About NSC 173182 usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of NSC 173182 during breastfeeding. Because of its poor oral bioavailability and short half-life, any NSC 173182 in milk is unlikely to affect the infant. Intravenous NSC 173182 infusion may decrease milk production. NSC 173182 is known to reduce serum prolactin in nonnursing women, but no information is available on its effect on milk production in nursing mothers.

NSC 173182 Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

Intravenous NSC 173182 infusion in doses of 2 to 5 mcg/kg/minute given to nonnursing subjects and in women with hyperprolactinemia decreases serum prolactin concentrations.[1][2][3][4][5] However, relevant published information on the effect of intravenous NSC 173182 on milk production in nursing mothers was not found as of the revision date. The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
