I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Vildagliptin? Is Vildagliptin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Vildagliptin extracts into breast milk? Does Vildagliptin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Vildagliptin influence milk supply or can Vildagliptin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

It promotes pancreatic insulin secretion by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme that degrades the intestinal hormone GLP-1 that is activated upon eating (EMA 2016, Scheen 2011).Very low risk of hypoglycemia. Recommended dose: one to two doses daily. Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breast milk. Its pharmacokinetic data (EMA 2016, Scheen 2011) - low molecular weight and low percentage of binding to plasma proteins - makes it likely that significant amounts will pass into breast milk. Until there is more published data on this drug in relation to breastfeeding, safer known alternatives may be preferable, especially during the neonatal period and in case of prematurity.
