Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Pyrethrin I or II? Is Pyrethrin I or II safe for nursing mother and child? Does Pyrethrin I or II extracts into breast milk? Does Pyrethrin I or II has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Pyrethrin I or II influence milk supply or can Pyrethrin I or II decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Pyrethrin I or II usage in lactation

Because absorption after topical application is very limited, occasional Pyrethrin I or II and piperonyl butoxide use is acceptable in nursing mothers. Extensive exposure, such as from agricultural use or malaria control might have long-term health concerns because residues can be found in breastmilk.[1] Only water-miscible cream, gel or liquid products should be applied to the breast because ointments may expose the infant to high levels of mineral paraffins via licking.[2]
