Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use SM13496? Is SM13496 safe for nursing mother and child? Does SM13496 extracts into breast milk? Does SM13496 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can SM13496 influence milk supply or can SM13496 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About SM13496 usage in lactation

SM13496 is more than 99% bound to plasma proteins. so it is unlikely that the drug would be excreted into milk in sufficient amounts to affect a breastfed infant. But since there is no published experience with SM13496 during breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.[1]

SM13496 Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

SM13496 has caused elevated prolactin serum in patients taking the drug.[2] The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
