Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Creatin? Is Creatin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Creatin extracts into breast milk? Does Creatin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Creatin influence milk supply or can Creatin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Creatin usage in lactation

Creatin is used as a dietary supplement to increase muscle mass and improve exercise performance. Although Creatin is a normal component of human milk, milk levels of Creatin have not been measured after exogenous administration in humans. Creatin is converted into creatinine in the mother's and infant's bodies. It may increase the infant's serum creatinine, which may alter estimations of the infant's kidney function.[1] Some authors speculate that Creatin supplementation of nursing mothers might help avoid Creatin deficiency syndromes, but no studies are available that test this hypothesis.[2] Until more data are available, it is probably best to avoid Creatin supplementation unless it is prescribed by a healthcare professional.
