Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Kreatin? Is Kreatin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Kreatin extracts into breast milk? Does Kreatin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Kreatin influence milk supply or can Kreatin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Kreatin usage in lactation

Kreatin is used as a dietary supplement to increase muscle mass and improve exercise performance. Although Kreatin is a normal component of human milk, milk levels of Kreatin have not been measured after exogenous administration in humans. Kreatin is converted into creatinine in the mother's and infant's bodies. It may increase the infant's serum creatinine, which may alter estimations of the infant's kidney function.[1] Some authors speculate that Kreatin supplementation of nursing mothers might help avoid Kreatin deficiency syndromes, but no studies are available that test this hypothesis.[2] Until more data are available, it is probably best to avoid Kreatin supplementation unless it is prescribed by a healthcare professional.
