Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Hematide? Is Hematide safe for nursing mother and child? Does Hematide extracts into breast milk? Does Hematide has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Hematide influence milk supply or can Hematide decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Hematide usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of Hematide during breastfeeding. Because of its large molecular weight of 4900 daltons, excretion into breastmilk should be minimal and it would not be expected to be absorbed from breastmilk by the infant. If Hematide is required by the mother of an older infant, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding, but until more data become available, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
