Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use U-62,840? Is U-62,840 safe for nursing mother and child? Does U-62,840 extracts into breast milk? Does U-62,840 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can U-62,840 influence milk supply or can U-62,840 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About U-62,840 usage in lactation

One patient taking U-62,840 breastfed her infant for one year without any complications. If U-62,840 is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. However, until more data are available, U-62,840 should only be used with careful monitoring during breastfeeding.

U-62,840 Side Effects in Breastfeeding

A woman developed pulmonary artery hypertension and was treated with intravenous U-62,840 beginning at 32 weeks of gestation and titrated up to 26 ng/kg/min. The dose was nearly doubled postpartum because of worsening symptoms. She breastfed (extent not stated) her infant for one year with no apparent drug-related problems, although there was concern for obesity at 6 months of age. The infant was healthy and developing normally at 2 years of age.[1]
