Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester)? Is N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) safe for nursing mother and child? Does N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) extracts into breast milk? Does N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) influence milk supply or can N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) usage in lactation

Limited information indicates that a maternal dose of 500 mg of N-(5-Nitro-2-thiazolyl)salicylamide acetate (ester) produces low levels of an active metabolite, tizoxanide, in breastmilk and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants, especially if the infant is older than 2 months. But until more data become available, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
