Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use S 4661? Is S 4661 safe for nursing mother and child? Does S 4661 extracts into breast milk? Does S 4661 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can S 4661 influence milk supply or can S 4661 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About S 4661 usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of S 4661 during breastfeeding. Its excretion into breastmilk is likely similar to that of imipenem and meropenem, which produce low levels in milk that are not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. Occasionally disruption of the infant's gastrointestinal flora, resulting in diarrhea or thrush has been reported with beta-lactams, but these effects have not been adequately evaluated. S 4661 is acceptable in nursing mothers.
