Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Invokana? Is Invokana safe for nursing mother and child? Does Invokana extracts into breast milk? Does Invokana has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Invokana influence milk supply or can Invokana decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Invokana usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of Invokana during breastfeeding. Invokana is is an uncharged molecule that is 99% protein bound in plasma, so it is unlikely to pass into breastmilk in clinically important amounts. The manufacturer does not recommend Invokana during breastfeeding because of a theoretical risk to the infant's developing kidney. An alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
