Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use LDP-02? Is LDP-02 safe for nursing mother and child? Does LDP-02 extracts into breast milk? Does LDP-02 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can LDP-02 influence milk supply or can LDP-02 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About LDP-02 usage in lactation

Limited information indicates that maternal LDP-02 injections produce low levels in breastmilk and does not adversely affect the nursing infant. Because LDP-02 is a large protein molecule with a molecular weight of about 147,000, absorption is unlikely because it is probably destroyed in the infant's gastrointestinal tract. Until more data become available, LDP-02 should be used with caution during breastfeeding, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.

LDP-02 Side Effects in Breastfeeding

Eight women who were receiving LDP-02 for inflammatory bowel disease were breastfeeding their infants (extent not stated). Dosages were 300 mg intravenously, at 1 to 2 month intervals for 6 and starting during induction for 2 women. No increase in general or gastrointestinal tract infections were seen in the newborns up to 10 months of age and all infants reached their development milestones.[1] Five infants were breastfed by mothers receiving LDP-02 300 mg intravenously at regular intervals. The infants all had normal developmental milestones at 3.5 to 10 months of age. All of the infants routine inactive vaccines without complications.[2]
