Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use HSDB 8194? Is HSDB 8194 safe for nursing mother and child? Does HSDB 8194 extracts into breast milk? Does HSDB 8194 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can HSDB 8194 influence milk supply or can HSDB 8194 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About HSDB 8194 usage in lactation

If HSDB 8194 is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. Because HSDB 8194 is poorly absorbed orally, it is not likely to reach the bloodstream of the infant or cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. Monitor the infant for possible effects on the gastrointestinal tract, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and candidiasis (e.g., thrush, diaper rash). However, because there is no published experience with HSDB 8194 during breastfeeding, an alternate drug may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
