Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Oxypsoralen? Is Oxypsoralen safe for nursing mother and child? Does Oxypsoralen extracts into breast milk? Does Oxypsoralen has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Oxypsoralen influence milk supply or can Oxypsoralen decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Oxypsoralen usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of Oxypsoralen during breastfeeding. Expert opinion indicates that due to the photosensitizing effects of Oxypsoralen, breastfeeding should be withheld for 24 hours after an oral dose to allow for 95% of the drug to be eliminated in the mother's urine.[1][2] The same precaution probably applies to patients receiving Oxypsoralen as a part of therapy for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Use of topical Oxypsoralen is not contraindicated during breastfeeding,[3][4] but avoid direct contact of the treated skin with the skin of the infant.
