Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Uvadex? Is Uvadex safe for nursing mother and child? Does Uvadex extracts into breast milk? Does Uvadex has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Uvadex influence milk supply or can Uvadex decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Uvadex usage in lactation

No information is available on the use of Uvadex during breastfeeding. Expert opinion indicates that due to the photosensitizing effects of Uvadex, breastfeeding should be withheld for 24 hours after an oral dose to allow for 95% of the drug to be eliminated in the mother's urine.[1][2] The same precaution probably applies to patients receiving Uvadex as a part of therapy for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Use of topical Uvadex is not contraindicated during breastfeeding,[3][4] but avoid direct contact of the treated skin with the skin of the infant.
