Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use BIBW 2992? Is BIBW 2992 safe for nursing mother and child? Does BIBW 2992 extracts into breast milk? Does BIBW 2992 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can BIBW 2992 influence milk supply or can BIBW 2992 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About BIBW 2992 usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of BIBW 2992 during breastfeeding. Because BIBW 2992 is about 95% bound to plasma proteins, the amount in milk is likely to be low. However, its half-life is about 37 hours and it might accumulate in the infant. the manufacturer recommends that breastfeeding be discontinued during BIBW 2992 therapy and for 2 weeks after the last dose.
