Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Alecensa? Is Alecensa safe for nursing mother and child? Does Alecensa extracts into breast milk? Does Alecensa has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Alecensa influence milk supply or can Alecensa decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Alecensa usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of Alecensa during breastfeeding. Because Alecensa is more than 99% bound to plasma proteins, the amount in milk is likely to be low. However, its half-life is about 33 hours and it might accumulate in the infant. The manufacturer recommends that breastfeeding be discontinued during Alecensa therapy and for 1 week after the last dose.
