Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Zactima? Is Zactima safe for nursing mother and child? Does Zactima extracts into breast milk? Does Zactima has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Zactima influence milk supply or can Zactima decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Zactima usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of Zactima during breastfeeding. Because Zactima is 90% bound to plasma proteins, the amount in milk is likely to be low. However, its half-life is 19 days and it might accumulate in the infant. The manufacturer recommends that breastfeeding be discontinued during Zactima therapy and for 4 months after the last dose.
