Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Precedex? Is Precedex safe for nursing mother and child? Does Precedex extracts into breast milk? Does Precedex has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Precedex influence milk supply or can Precedex decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Precedex usage in lactation

Limited data indicate that very small amounts of Precedex are excreted into breastmilk for 6 hours after the end of an infusion. Because of the small amounts of colostrum secreted in the first day postpartum, the dose received by a neonate is unlikely to be of any consequence when the drug is used during delivery. The drug is absent from breastmilk by 24 hours after the end of an infusion. Precedex would not be expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants or neonates.
