I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Lutathera? Is Lutathera safe for nursing mother and child? Does Lutathera extracts into breast milk? Does Lutathera has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Lutathera influence milk supply or can Lutathera decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?
Lutathera is a radiolabeled somatostatin analog indicated for the treatment of somatostatin receptor-positive gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. No information is available on the use of Lutathera during breastfeeding. The manufacturer recommends that breastfeeding be discontinued during Lutathera therapy and for 2.5 months following the last dose, which would usually mean permanently discontinuing breastfeeding of the current infant. Mothers concerned about the level of radioactivity in their milk could ask to have it tested at a nuclear medicine facility at their hospital. When the radioactivity is at a safe level she may resume breastfeeding. A method for measuring milk radioactivity and determining the time when a mother can safely resume breastfeeding has been published.[1]
