Can Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate influence milk supply or can Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate usage in lactation

No information is available on the clinical use of Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate during breastfeeding. After instillation into the bladder, only about 7% of a dose is absorbed into the maternal bloodstream, so the amount of drug excreted into milk is expected to be minimal. If Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. Until more data become available, Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate should be used with caution during breastfeeding, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
