I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Nuvigil? Is Nuvigil safe for nursing mother and child? Does Nuvigil extracts into breast milk? Used for treatment of narcolepsy. On latest update relevant data on breastfeeding was not found. Pharmacokinetic data indicates that drug excretion into breast milk would be significant. Until more information concerning breastfeeding is available, a safer alternative is preferred.

Nuvigil is the R-enantiomer of modafinil. No information is available on the use of Nuvigil during breastfeeding. Minimal information from women who breastfed their infant's while using modafinil found no adverse effects in the infants. Until more safety data are available, Nuvigil should be used with careful infant monitoring during breastfeeding, or an alternate drug may be preferred.

Nuvigil Side Effects in Breastfeeding

In one case-control study of women having narcolepsy with cataplexy, some women (fewer than 6) breastfed their infants while taking modafinil. No adverse effects were noted. The authors felt that the risk from the medication is low.[1]
