Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Hycamtin? Is Hycamtin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Hycamtin extracts into breast milk? Does Hycamtin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Hycamtin influence milk supply or can Hycamtin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Hycamtin usage in lactation

Most sources consider breastfeeding to be contraindicated during maternal high-dose antineoplastic drug therapy. The manufacturer recommends that women not breastfeed during treatment with Hycamtin and for 1 week after the last dose. Chemotherapy may adversely affect the normal microbiome and chemical makeup of breastmilk.[1] Women who receive chemotherapy during pregnancy are more likely to have difficulty nursing their infant.[2]
