Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Topotecan lactone? Is Topotecan lactone safe for nursing mother and child? Does Topotecan lactone extracts into breast milk? Does Topotecan lactone has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Topotecan lactone influence milk supply or can Topotecan lactone decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Topotecan lactone usage in lactation

Most sources consider breastfeeding to be contraindicated during maternal high-dose antineoplastic drug therapy. The manufacturer recommends that women not breastfeed during treatment with Topotecan lactone and for 1 week after the last dose. Chemotherapy may adversely affect the normal microbiome and chemical makeup of breastmilk.[1] Women who receive chemotherapy during pregnancy are more likely to have difficulty nursing their infant.[2]
