I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Drospirenone? Is Drospirenone safe for nursing mother and child? Does Drospirenone extracts into breast milk? Does Drospirenone has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Drospirenone influence milk supply or can Drospirenone decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Drospirenone is a progestin that is an analogue of spironolactone. It has antimineralocorticoid and antiandrogenic activities and is available in the U.S. only in combination with ethinyl estradiol as an oral contraceptive agent. Based on the available evidence, expert opinion holds that nonhormonal methods are preferred during breastfeeding and progestin-only contraceptive are preferred over combined oral contraceptives in breastfeeding women, especially during the first 4 weeks postpartum.
