Does BB-K 8 has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can BB-K 8 influence milk supply or can BB-K 8 decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

BB-K 8 lactation summary

BB-K 8 is safe in breastfeeding
  • DrLact safety Score for BB-K 8 is 1 out of 8 which is considered Safe as per our analyses.
  • A safety Score of 1 indicates that usage of BB-K 8 is mostly safe during lactation for breastfed baby.
  • Our study of different scientific research also indicates that BB-K 8 does not cause any serious side effects in breastfeeding mothers.
  • Most of scientific studies and research papers declaring usage of BB-K 8 safe in breastfeeding are based on normal dosage and may not hold true for higher dosage.
  • Score calculated using the DrLact safety Version 1.2 model, this score ranges from 0 to 8 and measures overall safety of drug in lactation. Scores are primarily calculated using publicly available case studies, research papers, other scientific journals and publically available data.

Answer by Dr. Ru: About BB-K 8 usage in lactation

Levels in the mother's milk are very low and in most instances undetectable. Like other aminoglycosides it is poorly absorbed in the intestine. Large doses may affect intestinal flora. Be aware of false negative bacterial cultures in the infant when the mother is on antibiotics. .

Answer by DrLact: About BB-K 8 usage in lactation

BB-K 8 is poorly excreted into breastmilk. Newborn infants apparently absorb small amounts of other aminoglycosides, but serum levels with typical three times daily dosages are far below those attained when treating newborn infections and systemic effects of BB-K 8 are unlikely. Older infants would be expected to absorb even less BB-K 8. Because there is little variability in the milk BB-K 8 levels during multiple daily dose regimens, timing breastfeeding with respect to the dose is of little or no benefit in reducing infant exposure. Data are not available with single daily dose regimens. Monitor the infant for possible effects on the gastrointestinal flora, such as diarrhea, candidiasis (e.g., thrush, diaper rash) or rarely, blood in the stool indicating possible antibiotic-associated colitis.
