Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Ferumoxides? Is Ferumoxides safe for nursing mother and child? Does Ferumoxides extracts into breast milk? Does Ferumoxides has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Ferumoxides influence milk supply or can Ferumoxides decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Ferumoxides usage in lactation

Ferumoxides is a complex of iron oxide and dextran, similar to iron dextran. It is not expected to pose a toxic risk to a nursing infant. If ferumoxides is required by the mother, it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding. However, because there is no published experience with ferumoxides during breastfeeding, other agents may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
