I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Bicillin L-A? Is Bicillin L-A safe for nursing mother and child? Does Bicillin L-A extracts into breast milk? Does Bicillin L-A has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Bicillin L-A influence milk supply or can Bicillin L-A decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?
: Limited information indicates Bicillin L-A produces low levels in milk that are not expected to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. Occasionally disruption of the infant's gastrointestinal flora, resulting in diarrhea or thrush have been reported with penicillins, but these effects have not been adequately evaluated. Bicillin L-A is acceptable in nursing mothers.
A breastfed 1-month-old infant with congenital syphilis developed a Herxheimer reaction 6 hours after its mother received 2.4 million units of Bicillin L-A intramuscularly. However, the baby had also received 10 units of penicillin G at about the same time as the mother's injection. The reaction was possibly caused by penicillin in breastmilk.[2]
