Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Preferid? Is Preferid safe for nursing mother and child? Does Preferid extracts into breast milk? Does Preferid has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Preferid influence milk supply or can Preferid decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Preferid usage in lactation

The amounts of inhaled Preferid excreted into breastmilk are minute and infant exposure is negligible. When taken by mouth, Preferid is only about 9% bioavailable; bioavailability in the infant is likely to be similarly low for any Preferid that enters the breastmilk. Most experts consider oral and inhaled corticosteroids, including Preferid, acceptable to use during breastfeeding.[1][2][3][4][5]

Preferid Side Effects in Breastfeeding

None reported with any corticosteroid.
