Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Pulmicort Respules? Is Pulmicort Respules safe for nursing mother and child? Does Pulmicort Respules extracts into breast milk? Does Pulmicort Respules has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Pulmicort Respules influence milk supply or can Pulmicort Respules decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Pulmicort Respules usage in lactation

The amounts of inhaled Pulmicort Respules excreted into breastmilk are minute and infant exposure is negligible. When taken by mouth, Pulmicort Respules is only about 9% bioavailable; bioavailability in the infant is likely to be similarly low for any Pulmicort Respules that enters the breastmilk. Most experts consider oral and inhaled corticosteroids, including Pulmicort Respules, acceptable to use during breastfeeding.[1][2][3][4][5]
