Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Tretinoin? Is Tretinoin safe for nursing mother and child? Does Tretinoin extracts into breast milk? Does Tretinoin has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Tretinoin influence milk supply or can Tretinoin decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Tretinoin usage in lactation

Tretinoin has not been studied during breastfeeding. Breastfeeding should probably be avoided after oral use. Because it is poorly absorbed after topical application, it is considered a low risk to the nursing infant.[1][2][3] Ensure that the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with the areas of skin that have been treated. Only water-miscible cream or gel products should be applied to the breast because ointments may expose the infant to high levels of mineral paraffins via licking.[4]

Tretinoin Possible Effects in Breastfeeding

A review of adverse reaction reports on retinoids causing a breast reaction submitted to a French pharmacovigilance center found 1 case of gynecomastia was associated with topical tretinoin use.[5]
