Question

I am a breastfeeding mother and i want to know if it is safe to use Iodipamide? Is Iodipamide safe for nursing mother and child? Does Iodipamide extracts into breast milk? Does Iodipamide has any long term or short term side effects on infants? Can Iodipamide influence milk supply or can Iodipamide decrease milk supply in lactating mothers?

Answer by DrLact: About Iodipamide usage in lactation

Intravenous iodinated contrast media are poorly excreted into breastmilk and poorly absorbed orally so they are not likely to reach the bloodstream of the infant or cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants. Guidelines developed by several professional organizations state that breastfeeding need not be disrupted after a nursing mother receives a iodine-containing contrast medium.[1][2][3][4] However, because there is no published experience with iodipamide during breastfeeding, other agents may be preferred, especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
